IVF Process: Step by Step

When it comes to fertility treatments to help us conceive and have the child we’ve always wanted, in vitro fertilization (IVF) is at the top of the list, thanks to its higher success rate and more effective results than any other fertility treatment.

Before going into all the detail about the IVF process step by step, we need to understand that the basic process of IVF is the same, but the steps of the IVF process differ from person to person according to their IVF treatment plan as set by their doctor.

THE STEP-BY-STEP GUIDE TO THE IN VITRO FERTILIZATION (IVF) PROCESS :

STEP 1: STIMULATION OF EGGS

After evaluating your health, your fertility expert will start you on fertility drugs to boost egg production. These fertility drugs contain a hormone called follicle-stimulating hormone, which tells your body to produce more than one egg per month.

The more eggs you produce, the more likely you are to have a successful pregnancy.

STEP 2: RETRIEVAL OF EGGS

To help mature eggs quickly, a hormone injection is being given before the scheduled retrieval of eggs from your body.

STEP 3: SPERM COLLECTION

A sperm sample can be donated either by your partner or by the donor while the egg is being retrieved, and after the collection, the sperm is being washed at high speed to choose the best and healthiest ones.

STEP 4: COMBINING SPERM & EGGS

This process is the main part of in vitro fertilization, where the healthy sperm is combined with the healthy eggs in a lab to begin the fertilization and create a single or multiple embryos.

STEP 5: TRANSFERING OF EMBRYOS INTO UTERUS

Your fertility expert will give you yet another medication following the egg retrieval procedure in order to prepare the lining of your uterus for the re-implantation of the embryos.

The goal of multiple embryo transfers is to increase the likelihood that at least one will successfully attach to the uterine lining and start to develop, leading to a successful pregnancy. People who choose IVF often end up with multiple pregnancies since it is common for more than one embryo to implant.

STEP 6: PREGNANCY TEST

After about 2 weeks of embryo transfer (it may take a little longer in some people; it varies from person to person), your fertility expert will examine your blood test for pregnancy.
